Greek myths contain a lot of material to draw on, and Immortals Fenyx Rising does its best to give everyone their due. People looking for a gripping tale centered around the protagonist should adjust their expectations in favor of 'Immortals Fenyx Rising's' lighter, less cerebral take on the hero's journey. When the backdrop of your story is the entirety of Greek mythology, it's hard to stand out. With a tremendously voiced and hilarious cast of characters, scenic vistas, engaging exploration and mostly on-point gameplay, Immortals Fenyx Rising is as fun and weird as those gorgon-creating, swan-banging, wife-eating gods themselves. There aren’t many games where knowing the twelve labors of Herakles comes in handy, nor are there many where the narrators discuss nonbinary gods and make jokes about how centaurs are basically “sexy horse people.” Though the heart of Immortals Fenyx Rising is a straightforward and somewhat predictable hero story, its fantastically well researched deep dive into the Greek gods’ flawed characters and mythology makes the game fresh, funny, and unique. Fenyx’s mission is to reassemble the gods for a second crack at Typhon, a task that takes them across the monster and puzzle-laden landscape of the Golden Isle. In Immortals Fenyx Rising the player is Fenyx, a shield bearer and storyteller who washes up on a beach to find the rest of humanity has been turned to stone after the titan Typhon won an apocalyptic battle against the gods and heroes of legend. The Greek pantheon has been explored in video games before, most notably with the original God of War series, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey DLC, and Hades, but Immortals Fenyx Rising is the first to offer a fully open world immersed in the Kronos family bullshit from sky to seabed. They were petty, vindictive, horny, destructive, and all around trash fire deities whose myths are wildly entertaining to this day. It seems like this new game will require a lot of work to be done on it, especially considering the departure Polynesian mythology marks from both the main game of Immortals Fenyx Rising and its DLC, which hinted at a future Chinese mythology setting. As far as pantheons go, the Greek gods were a total mess. Grubb says that the game is in very early pre-production with a very loose release date of 2025. While this does seem like a lot of news on an Immortal Fenyx Rising sequel, fans shouldn't hold their breath for the game. Ultimately, a lot of these differences are reportedly being made so that the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel can distance itself from Breath of the Wild. There will still be a god narrator, for example and the visual style is reportedly the same. While a lot of these new features sound like they will depart heavily from the first game, there will be some similarities between Immortals Fenyx Rising and its sequel or spin-off. Like other recent Ubisoft games such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla, the game will feature a choice of a male or female protagonist.Īlso, Grubb goes on to say that the setting will feature a focus on Hawaiian and Polynesian mythology. Allegedly as well, the Immortals title will be ditched, and the "production" name of the game is Oxygen You're a Hero, but it's unknown if this is just a development name or intended to be the actual title. Ultimately, Grubb indicated that the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel is not a proper sequel and acts more as a spin-off to the first game. This rumor comes from industry insider and games journalist Jeff Grubb, who mentioned this change in his Game Mess Decides podcast. RELATED: Leaker Claims Ubisoft Has Over 20 Games Lined Up for Announcement Now, it appears that the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising will be heading for a Polynesian mythology focus, departing from much of the foundations set by the first game. Considering the first Immortals Fenyx Risingtitle dealt with Greek mythology, it seemed to make sense that a new game could depart from that and look towards a new setting. Immediately, fans began speculating on what this sequel could look like. Reports came in earlier this year that a sequel to the open-world title was potentially in the works.
