Fable should be a vibrant, magical setting with an undercurrent of horror and darkness boiling underneath. The Witcher is set in a dark and depressing, crapsack world but it has this effective undercurrent of irony and humor laced throughout. Lion Head gave me the choice to go around fighting with a pan and being all goofy or taking the game semi-seriously.Īs it is I think the next Fable should contrast with the Witcher. But I wouldn't want to name my character that. For example in Fable 1 I could go to a vendor and get my name chaged to Arseface. It's not nearly as terrible as people make it out, but I think they took the "Fable humor" too far and lacked some of the subtlety of the previous games. Maybe at the beginning of the game I can fight a handful of bandits and live, but even in the late game maybe there should be a "bite off more than I can chew" threshold.įable 3 has some good and bad. There has to be some sense of peril even when you are that fully maxed out Hero of Legend. I think that getting rid of the "dying" mechanic in Fable 2 was a mistake. Gameplay wasn't challenging after a while. Points for innovation, but it didn't pan out in execution. Then there was the God awful menu and inventory which was a great idea on paper. So which is it, is the Prince an altruist, a pragmatist, an anarchist, or a psychopath? You can try writing dialogue for all four, but that's a difficult task and even more difficult to implement alongside the morality system. Also when you delve into a predefined character it's hard to juggle more than one or two motivations. The Prince(ess) was a good start at Lion Head creating a predefined protagonist, but he wasn't interesting enough. I'm sure this turned a lot of casual players off. Look, I like that type of stuff, but not everyone enjoys playing as a real estate mogul and then the game goes further and forces you to penny pinch and play as one to get the "good ending". Good parts were the story when you weren't forced into playing a real estate simulator.
